From our 2020 Virtual SHE: Tilted Crown Affair

Jasmin Barnett - Speaker

Jasmin Barnett is a mentor and youth director who is passionate about helping young people of color find their purpose in life. Jasmin believes that while the opportunities do exist the access to these opportunities have to be bridged for all. Jasmin truly believes that the children are the future and that the community must first build up the young people in the community if they want to make a change for the future. Jasmin's life’s work is dedicated to building children of color up so that they can fall in love with themselves and have an unshakeable confidence that allows them to avoid peer pressure & accomplish their dreams.

Jasmin is a ‘Millennial Changemaker’, an awardee of The Skillman Foundations ’50 People Who Represent the Heart of Detroit' and that still does not fully answer the question of who she is. Jasmin is the author of Quarantine Poetry a poetry book based on feelings during the global pandemic. She is also a champion for racial equity and diversity. She  serves as a board member for the Charles H. Wright African American Museum and Street Wise Partners. Jasmin graduated with a degree in Political Science and African American Studies from Howard University where she was inspired to move back to Detroit to get her Master’s Degree in Social Justice and a concentration in Urban Planning and Community Development. Jasmin is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Currently, Jasmin is a fellow with the Kellogg Foundation and the Center for Creative Leadership studying to be a world changer.

Jasmin chooses to be an advocate for youth because she wants children of color to see greatness. It is important that children of color get to see and learn about different career options. How can we make leaders out of children when we don't give them direction? When we don't show them leaders who look like them?

In 2004, Dr. Derschaun Brown became the President and Founder of Helping Individuals Succeed (HIS), a community driven, non-profit organization dedicated to developing positive character in the lives of inner-city youth and their families.

Her vision for the HIS Agency was to empower inner-city youth with the tools needed to boost their self-esteem and confidence. Her vision was cultivated through her childhood, education and life experiences. At eight years old, she attended charm school which not only taught Dr. Brown about manners and etiquette, it helped build her confidence to pursue other creative endeavors in music, modeling and acting. After graduating from high school, she earned a bachelor’s degree in health care administration from Davenport University and in 2013, received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.  In 2019 she became a Certified Coach.

Besides HIS Agency, Derschaun worked for the Detroit Public Schools (DPS). While working at DPS she facilitated programs that boosted the confidence and self-esteem of young boys and girls. In 2019 she wrote her first book entitled “I am the Gift” aimed at helping young ladies boost their confidence and self-esteem.  HIS Agency offers programs in success, entrepreneurship and etiquette for boys and girls. For many years HIS Agency has facilitated the “You Are the Pearl” Camps for young women and the camps are held at College Campuses to give the girls a taste of the college life.
